Mulching in four steps
Clear the weeds
Pull weeds and rake off old, matted mulch so the new layer sits on soil.
Water first
Water the bed before you spread. Fine mulch goes down easier on damp soil.
Spread to depth
About 2 inches for fine mulch, 3 to 4 for coarse chips. Never mix it into the soil.
Pull it back
Leave a gap around stems and keep mulch 6 to 12 inches off tree trunks.

Why we sell mulch
Every week, tree trimmers cut branches from yards, parks, and orchards, and all that wood has to go somewhere. We saw garden soil.
Canopy Mulch Co. partners with local tree trimmers, sorts their chips by tree type and particle size, and delivers them to gardeners who need them. Our mission is simple: help people grow healthier soil with mulch that came from real trees nearby.
Hi, I'm Bobo.
My name is Tobey, but everyone calls me Bobo. I'm the arborist behind Canopy Mulch Co. I trim the trees, haul the branches in my 1997 Ford Ranger, and process them into the mulch you buy here.
I study Tropical Agriculture at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, with a minor in Business. I also run a landscaping business, where much of my work is repairing landscapes after heavy rain.
Every bag starts on a trimming job, so the person who cut the branches is the same person who sorts your mulch.

What mulch does for your garden
Every claim here comes from university extension research.
Holds water in the soil
A mulch layer slows evaporation, so soil stays moist between waterings. In University of California research, mulched avocado trees used less water than unmulched trees.

As wood mulch breaks down, it adds organic matter and nutrients. Fungi and other decomposers in the mulch drive that process.

Few weeds survive in a correctly applied wood chip mulch. That means less time spent weeding.

Mulch keeps the ground cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Most of a tree's fine roots sit in the top 18 to 24 inches of soil.

Arborist wood chips are one of the most sustainable mulches you can buy. They come from trees that were already being trimmed, they're available wherever trees are cared for, and they return their nutrients to the soil as they break down.
We never use dyed chips, painted wood, or pressure-treated lumber.
Mulch for farms and orchards
Growers use wood chip mulch around fruit trees to hold moisture and build soil over time. In UC research, mulched avocado trees developed better root systems and fewer diseased roots than unmulched trees.
